What was the most accessible event you’ve been a part of?

2023-06-06T18:03:03-05:00

What comes to mind when you think of accessibility? According to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Education, accessibility is “when a person with a disability is afforded the opportunity to acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services as a person without a disability in an equally integrated and equally effective manner, with substantially equivalent ease of use.” When events and venues are made accessible, it allows more people to attend and makes everything more fun! We recently asked folks what was the most accessible event they’ve [...]

What was one accommodation you were pleasantly surprised existed, even without having to ask?

2023-05-27T13:59:31-05:00

It feels like disabled folks are constantly having to ask for accessible options or accommodations, but it sure is nice when we don’t have to. In addition to things like being able to roll into a venue and be able to access the bathroom, dressing room, and stage with a wheelchair; not using strobe lights or fog; or having ASL interpreters, some venue owners and producers go above and beyond to accommodate performers and audience members with disabilities. Existing accommodations and accessibility options for disabled performers and audience members increase attendance and create a positive experience. We recently asked [...]

Red Flag, Green Flag: Liability Concerns for the Burlesque Industry

2023-07-09T23:24:35-05:00

About: The second panel in our “Red Flag, Green Flag” series builds on our broader conversation about safety. Liability issues that aren’t properly addressed beforehand can lead to irreparable harm and significant financial burdens. Performers, producers, stage technicians, venue owners, and managers should know how to keep themselves, and those around them, safe - physically, mentally, emotionally, and legally. Frankie Fingerling will bring together panelists Dahlia Kash, Liz Baskin’, and Winona J. Fox to offer food for thought and possible courses of action to address liability issues. Equipped with knowledge about contracts, occupational health and safety, and cautionary tales, this [...]

What is one thing you wish people knew about disabilities?

2023-03-22T17:37:50-05:00

The effects of disabilities are as diverse as the people with them. Disabilities vary widely from person to person and can be visible or invisible. They can be due to physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional, or sensory impairment. Disabilities can also be dynamic or affect one person completely differently than another Earlier in the month, we asked folks what they wish people knew about their disabilities. While there were a large variety of answers, a few common ideas resounded among our followers. “We may never know someone’s whole story, and we don’t always have the [...]
