What is the refund and cancellation policy?2022-02-10T16:25:25-06:00

All sales are final – no refunds.

If you are unable to make a live class, please let us know by emailing info@disabiliteaseacademy.com ASAP. Some classes will be recorded to view after the class, so even if you are unable to make it live, you will have access to the recording. Note that not all instructors will provide this option, so it is best to be in class – plus, it’s a great way to interact with other students and get immediate feedback from our instructors.

We have a five-student minimum in order to hold a class. If a class has not reached this minimum within one hour of the scheduled start time the class may be canceled. Be sure to check your email for any updates.

If a workshop has to be canceled on our behalf for any reason (instructor injury or illness, class minimum not met) you will receive a refund – OR – credit/partial credit toward another workshop.

Will there be closed captioning in class?2022-02-10T16:22:04-06:00

Yes! Both live and pre-recorded classes will have captions available. Live classes will be using auto-generated captions, so we cannot guarantee 100% accuracy.

How do live classes work?2022-02-10T16:21:55-06:00
  • You’ll need to have access to the internet and a computer or mobile device.
  •

  • All live classes will be presented in Zoom. You will receive the class link in an email when you purchase a ticket.
  •

  • Before your class time, download Zoom to your computer or mobile device. For the best experience, we recommend using a computer vs mobile device. Zoom also has a great Frequently Asked Questions page about if you need to sign up for an account, how to join a meeting, and how to troubleshoot video and audio issues. YOU DO NOT NEED A PAID ACCOUNT.
  •

  • You can log into the meeting 5 minutes before your class starts. Log into Zoom using the link provided and you will be entered into a waiting room. A DisabiliTease Academy team member will be on hand to provide tech support.
  •

  • You’ll need a video camera and a mic so that your teacher can see and hear you if you have questions. Most laptops have these built in. If you don’t have a camera or mic, or are not comfortable having them on, we can accommodate by using the chat option in Zoom.
  •

  • You can tune in from anywhere! Try to make sure that you have uninterrupted time during class so you can focus. If needed, be sure you have enough room to move around, and you have any supplies the instructor suggested.
  •

  • On the bottom, middle of your screen, you will see an option to turn on the auto-generated captions. We cannot guarantee the accuracy since they are generated by an AI, but we hope they will help. If you have any clarifying questions, feel free to ask the instructor. We find that the captions work best if there is not music while the instructor is talking, so if you have an important question, be sure to ask the instructor to turn off any background music for their response, or ask that it be typed in the chat.
  •

  • There might be quirks: slow connections, technical glitches, audio or video issues. We will do our best to minimize these, but technology often has its own plan. We appreciate patience for any issues that arise.
  •

  • We have a five student minimum in order to hold a class. If a class has not reached this minimum within one hour of the scheduled start time the class may be cancelled. Be sure to check your email for any updates. If a workshop has to be cancelled on our behalf for any reason (instructor injury or illness, class minimum not met) you will receive a refund – OR – credit/partial credit toward another workshop.

Is there an age requirement?2022-02-10T16:23:19-06:00

Yes, unless otherwise noted, all classes are for students 18+. We also request that children not be in the room while you are taking live classes. Not only for their protection from course material, but for protecting their identity and helping keep class free from distractions.

What are the student expectations?2023-01-30T19:55:29-06:00
    • Arrive on time
It is important to log in to Zoom approximately five minutes early so the class can begin on time and students do not miss any important announcements, introductions, instruction, etc. at the start of class. This will also give time to work with any technical difficulties. Also, be sure that your microphone stays off unless asked to turn them on.
    • Stick around
It’s always best to stay for the entire duration of the class, but if you must leave early, let your instructor know ahead of time. Please be quiet and respectful as you leave so that you do not disrupt the rest of the class.
    • Be kind and respectful
Be compassionate and don’t judge. This includes yourself, other students, and the instructor. Please be mindful and respectful of others’ pronouns as well as the type of language you use during class. Comments on body shape, size, weight, ability, etc can be harmful to both you and other students. We ask that everyone do their best to be self-aware and use kind, supportive language. Learn more about pronouns.
    • Active Listening
Listen while the instructor is talking. Pay attention so you, and others, don’t miss out on important information and instruction. Try to minimize distractions – be in a quiet room by yourself, as opposed to in a shared space with activity and noise happening. If you must step away, or a distraction occurs, please momentarily turn off your mic and camera until you are ready to participate again.
    • Listen to your body
If a movement is not comfortable, do not do it! Please do not push through something if you’re unsure it is safe for you to do. Feel free to ask the instructor for modifications or alternate movements if needed. Always consult your physician and get clearance for physical activity first and be sure to let your instructor know about any injuries or physical limitations. We are not responsible for any injury that occurs during class. Please read our disclaimers page for more information.
    • Self care – your well-being comes first!
Please do anything you need to take care of yourself. This could mean turning off your camera, taking medication, getting a drink, eating a snack, lying down or walking around. We just ask that you do not disturb others while doing so.
    • Wear appropriate and comfortable clothing
Comfortable clothing for YOU. Whatever you can move in! Be sure to read the class description to know what clothing you should be wearing, and what props you may need. For classes that may involve floor work, like chair dance, lyrical, and burlesque technique, knee pads are recommended to protect your knees. Some students opt to wear high heels for chair dance or burlesque technique, but this is not necessary! Only if you are comfortable in them.
    • Prior experience
We believe anyone can start doing movement arts ANY time in their life – so no experience is necessary. Our instructors have adequate training and experience to teach to varying levels and maintain a comfortable, welcoming environment. Unless a class description specifically says what experience or knowledge is needed for that class, it is suited for everyone!
    • Consent
Consent is mandatory. Do not give movement suggestions to students or instructors unless they have given explicit permission to do so. This could be very dangerous, especially for those with physical limitations.
    • Photos, videos, and screenshots
No photos, videos or screenshots may be taken during class unless otherwise specified. This is for everyone’s privacy and safety. Most classes will be recorded and they will be available within two weeks.
    • No sharing or distribution
Unless otherwise specified, all virtual and on-demand classes are intended for the sole participation of the registered student. Each participant must be a registered student. Recordings and class materials may not be saved, distributed, broadcast, or shared except by or with the explicit permission of the DisabiliTease Academy.

Teachers

Can I teach my class or workshop somewhere else?2022-05-28T17:22:53-05:00

The short answer is yes!

The subject matter can be taught elsewhere, but DTA owns all copyright to this singular class teaching and any recording.

However, class content cannot be available for free through another website or platform. If the class is taught or posted for free at a later date, we must be notified within 7 days to move the recording from the paid page to the free resource section.

What are the requirements for pre-recorded videos?2022-05-28T17:24:26-05:00

Video requirements:

  • Created in a horizontal format in 1920×1080, 1080p (preferred) or 1280×70, 720p
  • Stable filming
  • Good lighting
  • No strobe/quick flashing lights
  • No pre-captioning – we will add closed captioning to all performances before they are available for rent/purchase
  • No background noise
  • No one else in the video unless they are acting as an assistant and have given permission to be in the video
  • Videos must be given to the Academy at least one week before it goes live to allow for adding closed captioning and uploading to the website.
What are the requirements for movement-based classes?2022-05-28T17:29:49-05:00

At least one other movement option must be given for those with differing mobility abilities. Have clear plans for options along with the language to describe them. Use terms such as “if you’re comfortable,” or “here is another option, use the one that feels best.” An example would be: “Here is one option, here is another option, and here is one more – choose the one that makes you feel sexy, confident, and feels most comfortable for your body! Feel free to create your own movement or ask me for another option and we’ll create a movement together that works best for you.“

For choreography classes, be sure to run through the entire number using the different options.

Describing the movements you are doing will assist those with vision loss who may not be able to see your movements clearly.

Make changes to unintentionally ableist language. An example would be to “get in ready position” vs “stand,” or “enter stage” vs “walk on stage.” When in doubt, add “if you’re able/comfortable.”

Ask questions! Every student is affected by disability differently. You are not going to be able to provide options in advance that accommodate every possibility, but knowing your students’ options and limitations will help provide the best experience for both you and the student.

How do I write an effective class proposal?2022-04-04T11:34:36-05:00

Sailor St. Claire wrote a fantastic article about writing effective class proposals, which is available on the BurlyCon website. Topics include talking about the learning goals of the class, making sure those goals can be met in 60 to 90 minutes, and telling students what is expected of them.
